Stephanie Smith already knows what you think. She knows that some women believe she's behaving like a "Stepford wife" and others need her to recognize that "it's not 1950!" But Stephanie Smith also knows one other thing: She just secured a book deal (and a check!) to spread her message about expressing love by piling ingredients between two slices of bread. 
Smith is the blogger behind 300 Sandwiches, which began when her boyfriend told her jokingly (but not), “Honey, you’re 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring” after she made him a basic turkey and cheese. A non-cook, she realized that with a little effort she could get the ring, set the date and be on her way to the domestic future she wanted. She also decided to document it online, launching the blog in June 2012. Now, 197 sandwiches in, Smith has stepped up her game, getting fancy with ingredients like chives, fig jam and cranberries.

The blog was anonymous, but in September she outed herself in an article in the New York Post, where she works as a reporter for Page Six. The reactions were swift and not altogether positive. After all, many wondered, what kind of woman feels the need to come home from a work event and rush to the kitchen, still in heels, and make her man a sandwich, a scene Smith admitted she has done more than once. Smith claims she has found the venom amusing and it has not detracted her from her mission. "I'm a woman who loves her man, but also never backs down from a challenge. If he wants three hundred sandwiches, then I'll deliver," she wrote on the blog. Yet, what she sees as a challenge, others see as a setback to women's advancement in society and equality in relationships. Apparently, they also believe that it is their business to comment on what one woman wants to do in her own relationship.

That may be because as soon as Smith decided to put her sandwich-making challenge online, she blurred the line between what gets to be her private business and what gets to be public fodder. If Smith wanted to make his third sandwich of the day in privacy, she easily could have if she didn't document it all on her blog.

Luckily for her, publisher Dave Zinczenko had a different opinion than her detractors, saying, "So when she told us about her romantic, passionate, and very funny quest to make her boyfriend 300 sandwiches, our first reaction was, 'that’s a book.'" And around Valentine's Day 2015, it will be a book that everyone can read. It seems guaranteed to spark many heated conversations online, on Twitter and on The View. Maybe she'd be safer just releasing a cookbook.
