Common is cut from a different cloth and his mother is proud to explain why.

On Thursday, Dr. Mahalia Hines, the rapper's mom, made an appearance on his girlfriend Jennifer Hudson's talk show to discuss her new book, "Tomorrow's Children: How to Raise Children to Stay Human in a High Tech Society."  During her appearance, Dr. Hines delved into the intricacies of a chapter titled "Parenting and Friendship," emphasizing the profound importance of parental influence in shaping the next generation. She expressed her desire for readers of her book to grasp the essence of being exemplary figures in the dynamic bond between parent and child.

"You are not your child's friend—you are their parent," she told Hudson, 42. “And your job is not to be liked; it's to be right. One of the things I say is that if you give up that authority, you're going to lose respect because they will begin talking to you and acting like you, and when you try to check them, it doesn't work."

Dr. Hines also shared a truth that exemplifies the depths of her family dynamic with her famous son. 

"My son did not drink around me until he was almost 35 — and that was at a dinner," she told Hudson. "The reason being, we aren't friends. I'm not gonna sit around and drink with you."

"We can be friendly, but we're not friends," she continued. 

She also shared the wisdom she's gained over the years during her motherhood journey. 

"You are the role model. Be very conscious about what you do and what you say. Be intentional about showing love, about showing gratitude, about showing respect, because out of gratitude and respect comes love. And if they learn to love themselves, and to love you, you don't have anything to worry about."

Towards the end of the segment, Hudson gifted Dr. Hines with a gigantic bouquet of flowers and a framed letter from Common to her.

Earlier this year, Common also appeared as a guest on Hudon’s show where they each teased their blossoming relationship

"I'm in a relationship that is with one of the most beautiful people I ever met in life," he explained. "She's smart, she loves God, she has something real down-to-earth about her, she's talented."

He said that he had set his standards "high" with the special woman and that she was an EGOT winner.

In 2022, Hudson was crowned with the revered EGOT status following her Tony win for "A Strange Loop."

Dating rumors began to spark in July 2022 between the talk show host and Common after they worked together on the set of "Breathe," slated to be released later this year.
