The 2002 will that was reportedly Michael Jackson's last will and testament has been officially filed with the courts. In the will, Michael names his mother, Katherine Jackson, as the guardian of his three children. The will is dated July 7, 2002. It does not specify where Jackson wanted to be buried, but the Jackson family has just announced that there will not be a public viewing at Neverland Ranch, as previously reported.
A petition filed along with the will says that Michael's estate is worth over $500 million dollars. The will, filed Wednesday morning in Los Angeles Superior Court, leaves everything to the Michael Jackson Family Trust Fund. It names John Branca, John McClain and Barry Siegel as co-executors of the will. Branca and Siegel served as Jackson's attorneys, and McClain is a music industry executive and a longtime friend of Michael's.
Branca and McClain issued a statement on Wednesday morning, stating, "The most important element of Michael's will is his unwavering desire that his mother, Katherine, become the legal guardian for his three children. As we work to carry out Michael's instructions to safeguard both the future of his children as well as the remarkable legacy he left us as an artist we ask that all matters involving his estate be handled with the dignity and the respect that Michael and his family deserve."
The appointment of his mother as guardian of his children comes as no surprise, but in the will, Jackson specificies that if his mother does not survive him or can not serve as guardian, he nominates Diana Ross.
The Jackson family also released a statement today saying there would be no public viewing of Jackson at Neverland. It read, "Contrary to previous news reports, the Jackson family is officially stating that there will be no public or private viewing at Neverland. Plans are underway regarding a public memorial for Michael Jackson, and we will announce those plans shortly."
