El DeBarge Arrested

Posted Oct. 27, 2008 - Trouble seems to follow the Debarge family, a popular 80’s R&B group whose family members have seen their share of run-ins with the law. The latest mishap in a long history of arrests comes courtesy of the R&B group’s lead singer, El Debarge. El, whose real name is Patrick Eldra Debarge, was arrested in L.A. earlier this month for possession of a controlled substance. After his arrest, police discovered that Debarge had two warrants, according to TMZ.com. The 80’s pop star is being held without bail and is due in court tomorrow.

With this recent arrest, El Debarge is building a quite lengthy criminal track record. The 47-year old got arrested back in August 2007 after being accused of domestic violence. In 1996, he was arrested in Grand Rapids, Michigan for failing to pay child support. And back in the late 80s, El pleaded no contest to a charge of creating a disturbance after assaulting a college student.

El’s brothers, Chico, Robert, and Thomas, have all served jail time on cocaine charges. Last year, the mother of the Debarge family released her self-published book, “Other Side Of the Pain,” detailing accounts of her family’s fame, tragedy and loss.

DeBarge’s big hit was the song “Rhythm Of The Night,” which hit number 3 on the Billboard Top 100 chart. Many of their songs have been sampled by today’s hip-hop artists. DeBarge’s “A Dream” was both sampled by 2Pac in his song “I Ain’t Mad At Cha” and remade by Mary J. Blige for the soundtrack to the film “Money Talks.”
