Posted April 7, 2008 -- If you were confused on how it actually goes down in Atlanta, Lloyd and Ludacris can easily remind you. This past weekend, Lloyd shot the video for his first single, “How We Do It (Around My Way)” from his forthcoming CD, Lesson In Love. BET.com not only caught up with the The Inc. representative, but also the director, Tony P, about the direction of the video and a valuable lesson from Ludacris on how it really goes down in the “A."
Even though Tony Petrossian, who’s an Iranian video director, has only had his hand one other hip hop video throughout his career (S.A.N.T.A.N.A. by The Diplomats, 2004) his vision and intuition for Lloyd’s “How We Do It” indicated otherwise. “Here’s the concept; A party breaks out in Atlanta and Lloyd’s heading it off, but all around the county; Miami, Chicago, NY, people start to wonder what’s going on and begin leaving those cities to come to Atlanta. They even start walking through split screens to get to the party in Atlanta and that’s when they find out how we do it in the A,” Tony told BET.com of the project.
While Lloyd is no stranger to performing in front of the camera, this was his first time using a green screen (a technique for mixing two images together, in which a color from one image is removed (or made transparent), revealing another image behind it) and working with the rock director. “We’re using the soundstage, which is a really cool place to be and it’s our first time using this set up” Lloyd said. However, Tony’s shortage of hip hop videos and his Lloyd's lack of experience on a green screen set didn’t slow down the confidence of the young singer. “The director, Tony P, is an incredible guy and he usually does Rock videos so we’re going to switch it up and do a little something different this time around.”
Though Lloyd and Luda reside in the same state, the two never had the opportunity to collaborate with one another, until now. “The name of the song is “How We Do It in the A”, so there were but only so many rappers he could get on the song in the first place, so with that being said I went and got down on it” said Ludacris. And while creating noteworthy material comes easy for the mouth of the south, Luda already felt the presence of the track when he first heard it. “When I heard the record it sounded like it could be a big hit in my opinion you know crossover but still has that urban feel which lets everyone know how we do it in the “A." I haven’t done a song with Lloyd before and I feel like he’s doing his thing as an artist in which he continues to inspire, grow and entertain individuals and I’m happy to be apart of it,” Luda told BET.com.
Lloyd’s new album, Lesson in Love, is slated to hit stores July 15. For behind the scenes pictures and commentary for Lloyd’s new single, “How We Do It (Around My Way)," make sure you log on to BET’s SoundOff Blog.
