Though Soulja Boy (born DeAndre Way) has remained pretty tight-lipped about his recent arrest in Henry County Georgia, BET News got the Atlanta rapper to open up about the incident minutes after he finished rehearsing for his BET Hip-Hop Awards performance at the Atlantic Civic Center.
As previously reported, SB was arrested and charged with obstruction after telling Henry County authorities that a group assembled outside of an abandoned house was part of a music video shoot.
“I was just shooting a video and it kind of went left, but I'm just glad that I'm able to make it to the Hip-Hop Awards,” SB told BET News Correspondent Sharon Carpenter. “People said that I would miss the Awards. But while I was in there, there was a lot of things on my mind like my whole career, my family, especially how young I am, 19 years old, being put in that situation. It's just crazy.”
He added, “I thought about my mom, I thought about my whole entire family, about my father. I really saw my whole life flash before my eyes and it was just so much that I wanted to do at that particular time that it was amazing to me. I was like, man, you really don't know what you've got until it's gone. It really was a wake-up call, really and I really needed that.”
Though he’s no stranger to controversy, SB stresses that he didn’t mean any harm and has a great deal of respect for law enforcement.
“I just think that I got respect for the police, every city I go to the police always escort me to my concerts,” he explained. “Chris Brown tour, Lil' Wayne tour, ain't never ever had no problems with the police and I just think that I was at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Soulja Boy is nominated for the Track of the Year, People’s Champ and Made You Look awards at this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards. He’s also scheduled to take the stage. Make sure to tune in to the 2009 BET Hip-Hop Awards featuring Soulja Boy, October 27 at 8/7c.
