Well, it's a good thing that Kanye West wasn't anywhere near London last night when the 37th Annual American Music Awards aired, because Taylor Swift accepted three (count 'em) AMAs, including one where she even beat out Michael Jackson for Artist of the Year. The award came as a shock to both Taylor and MJ fans who saw Michael's music reach new heights in the wake of his untimely death. But with Michael picking up two other AMAs, reaching an all-time number of 28 AMAs, the show still managed to pay tribute to the biggest star of the year. It was the biggest comeback of the night.
And there were a few other celebrities who shared in MJ's comeback glory, including his little sister Janet, who opened the show with an 8-minute medley of some of the pop star's biggest hits. Janet relived dance numbers from "Control," "What Have You Done For Me Lately?," "Miss You Much," and other hits, and jumpstarted a night filled with high-energy performances. The ladies held it down as Whitney Houston, Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna all returned to the stage for the first time in a long time.
Whitney Houston, who returned to the AMA stage for the first time in 10 years, brought the audience to their feet with her performance of "I Didn't Know My Own Strength," just minutes before Samuel Jackson presented her with the International Artist Award. Other strong vocal performances came courtesy of Mary J. Blige and Alicia Keys.
But Whitney wasn't the only woman to show her strength. The AMAs also marked the first time that Rihanna performed since the incident between her and Chris Brown.
Even though the Black Eyed Peas awkwardly got recognized for being the Best Hip Hop band in the world, true hip hop heads know that the hip-hop performance of the night belonged to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys for their #1 song, "Empire State of Mind." Jay-Z later picked up a trophy in the Favorite Male Hip-Hop Artist category, to which he gracefully accepted with an interesting speech about how the song is meant to be inspiring. But Jay threw out a subliminal comment at the end of his speech; one that many believe was directed at 50 Cent. "Men lie, women lie, number's don't," he said before letting out a laugh and walking off with his Award. 50 Cent, who has been throwing shots at Jay over the last couple of weeks, is project to sell only 150,000 copies of his new album "Before I Self Destruct" in its first week of release. Jay-Z's comment came just minutes after 50 Cent had vacated the stage where he joined Eminem during his performance of "Crack A Bottle" and "Forever."
