Posted Dec. 1, 2008 – The attorney for star NFL receiver Plaxico Burress says his client will turn himself in to police this morning to be charged with a weapons violation two days after accidentally shooting himself in a New York night spot, The Associated Press is reporting.
The lawyer, Benjamin Brafman told The Associated Press on Sunday that he was advised the New York Giants' star receiver will be charged after accidentally shooting himself in the right thigh, Sport Illustrated reports.
"I do not expect that Mr. Burress will make a statement," Brafman wrote. Brafman said that he had met with Burress for about an hour Sunday at the player's home in New Jersey. "I would ask that his fans, the Giants and the media withhold judgment in this matter until all of the facts have been disclosed," Brafman wrote to AP in an email.
The troubled Super Bowl champion wide receiver shot himself at a New York City nightclub Friday night and was released from a hospital early Saturday.
"As far as we know, he's going to be OK," General Manager Jerry Reese said. "There's no way it can't be [a distraction]," defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka said. "He's one of us; that's our brother. He's definitely hurting and we're hurting with him. But once you're in this locker room, the show's got to go on. We're going to play and perform well for him and with him in mind, but we're not going to slip at all."
