A man reportedly told authorities that if he failed in his attempt to murder President Obama, three other accomplices would carry out the assassination. However, authorities got to him before he could get to the president.
The suspect, only identified as M.G., was arrested on Friday in Istanbul, where he apparently has a home. Turkish police said they received an e-mail tip claiming that the man, a Turkish national, was plotting to disguise himself as a journalist for the al-Jazeera news channel and obtained press accreditation for the president's trip to Turkey. The Saudi daily newspaper, al-Watan, claims the man planned on stabbing President Obama with a knife once he got close enough to him.
Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said the president was never in any immediate danger. President Obama did not arrive in Turkey until Sunday, two days after the man's arrest. Donovan said that as standard procedure involving a threat against the president overseas, the Secret Service is following up with Turkish authorities regarding the case.
