BUS FIGHT

By Tracy Stokes, BET.com Staff Writer & Wire Services

Posted Sept. 19, 2007 — When 26-year-old Shayla Muldrow got word that a bully was messing with her daughter, she got on the bus with her daughter one morning, went through a crowd of students and told her child to handle her business.

The Tampa, Fla., mom, who was in court Tuesday, told a judge and jury, while smacking bubble gum and blowing bubbles, that she wasn't trying to start trouble, she was only going to the rescue of her 9-year-old daughter.

In the video, you can see Muldrow following her daughters onto the bus saying, ""First of all, where's the girl who slapped my girl?"

The bully raised her hand and Muldrow lost it.

You hear Muldrow yelling at the 10-year-old bully and other children on the school bus.

What happened next was unbelievable.

She told her daughter to "handle it." Before her daughter started pounding on the bully, Muldrow says she helped her daughter take off her backpack telling the court, "I wasn't going to let her fight with her book bag on."

You can see Muldrow in the video standing back and watching while her daughter fights the other girl.

The bully, now 11, testified Tuesday saying that Muldrow told her daughter to come and hit her, reports The St. Petersburg Times.

Muldrow’s lawyers tried to convince the court that she was just acting like any concerned parent would and that it was the bus driver’s fault for letting things get out of control and the bully’s fault for starting everything in the first place.

But that's not how the jury saw it.

After deliberating for 90 minutes, they found Muldrow guilty of trespassing and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, both misdemeanors reports The Times.

Her sentencing will be Thursday morning, and she could be looking at up to two years in the county jail.

And Muldrow just may feel right at home there.

Prior to this incident, she had already been arrested 15 times for various offences. And just earlier this month, she was arrested for driving on a revoked license, reports The Times.

  • "she was dead wrong"
  • bad parenting is why we have soo many problems with our kids. she's teaching her daughter 1st hand to be violent, break the law and act out of emotional rage. she's setting her child up for a tragic future. we gotta stop with this foolishness and teach our kids how to play by the rules and win. cause at the end of the day the law is the law and they won't give a crap about how justified you felt u were or what ya mamma said..they'll just lock you up like a crazed animal.
  • "oh, well, this mom's"
  • behavior speaks for itself. i hope the food isn't too bad in jail.
  • "stupid ,,, stupid ,,, stupid"
  • not all black people do stupid things like that . try talking to parents , teachers , somebody besides making your child look stupid like you . i just know it was a better way to handle that ploblem
  • "what!!!??"
  • when i was young, my mom did the same thing. lol so i found this kind of funny. but up to 2 years in prison is unjustice.
  • "i'm glad she did this!!!"
  • i did the same thing concerning my daughter. a little punk was throwing rocks at her on the public bus, which my husband, son and i got on and let him know.......ignorant people and non-disciplined kids. our children are our most precious treasure ( free the jena six) hotep
  • "are you crazy"
  • it doesn't matter what actions the mother took prior to "forcing" her daughter to fight (if the daughter wanted to fight she would've done it before mom), and all of us "black folks" would not have "forced" our children to get into a fight. the bottom line is if you think it is right consider the fact that the mother is going to jail! do you think her kids will think she is a hero now? it's this type of ghetto mentality that got her arrested all those times in the first place.
  • "where is dr. king"
  • obviously this mothers philosophy hasn't been working because she has so many previous arrests. where is dr. king and ghandi when you need them, plain and simple violence begets violence, if this behavior is instilled in this child, she can expect a sad and lonely future
  • "it's sad!!!"
  • i feel her!! bullies aren't to be tolerated but what actions did the mother take before she confronted the bully on the bus? that's the question!!!!
  • "damn right!!"
  • she did what anyone of us black folks would do. we dont respect punks we dont respect bullies. so there it there.
