LYNCHING FEARS

From Staff & Wire Services

Posted Dec. 19, 2007 – John White might never have killed a 17-year-old White boy last year if the lynching ways of the Ku Klux Klan hadn’t driven his grandfather out of Alabama many years ago.

It was during John White's trial Friday, in the fatal shooting of Daniel Cicciaro, that he recalled his childhood fears that served as a backdrop to the current tragedy.

“In my family history, that’s how the Klan comes,” said White, who some describe as a gentle, peaceful man. “They pull up; they blind you with their lights. They burn your house down. They threaten your family. That’s how they come.”

So when Cicciaro and four other White youths showed up at his door last year yelling racial slurs and demanding to see White’s son, who they believed had threatened a young girl, White stood waving the loaded Berretta that was given to him by his grandfather, trying to back the youths off his property.

They were like a “lynch mob,” White told the jury Tuesday as he began to break down in a flood of tears. “Some little guy popped up on me. He tried to snatch the gun. I pulled back and it fired. I didn’t mean to shoot this young man — he’s another child of God.”

On Monday, the judge in the case ruled that the jury can consider the lesser charge of second-degree reckless endangerment, rather than the initial manslaughter charge, which carries five to 15 years in prison.

Reckless endangerment carries no minimum sentence.

Prosecutors contend that White deserves to be convicted and sent away to prison for waving a loaded weapon at unarmed youths. Fred Brewington, one of White’s three attorneys, however, said, “You can't close your eyes on the issue of race in this case. They went to go beat this ni**er’s ass. That’s what they said. They went to this man's house to do a modern-day lynching."

  • "misinformation"

  • "lynching fears"
  • i do not think this man should be charged with any crime, he was defending his family. and i'm more sure if the situation had been put into someone else's hand, they would have reacted the same way.a person has the right to defend themselves or their family, if they fear that they are in danger. he is very remorseful. his intention was not to shoot anyone, but again he was defending his family. all oo this should be considered. i have faith in the judicial system that they will see the truth.
  • "not a tough call at all"
  • without a doubt, this man should be freed.this man was doing what any real man would do, and that was protecting his family by whatever means that he felt was necessary at that given time. now im i applauding him for killing? no, not at all. but giving the circumstances, i would have been inclined to do the samething.the teenager should not have been there in the first place. the harsh reality is that the young men went looking for trouble and unfortunately...they found it.

  • "not a tough call at all"
  • now, if the system just want to prosecute someone, how about prosecuting the parents of this teenager that was allowed to be wandering around harrasing families in the wee hours of the morning? why didnt the parents know the whereabouts of their 17 year old son and what he was doing, or did they? and if they didnt and as a result he was injured, or in this case murdered...i think they refer to that as ummmmmm....neglect.
  • "thats right yall"
  • i agree black people! if those white kids showed up at my house calling me a nigger and making threats i would have shot every damn one of them! but of course, whites will be on here trying to defend the juvenile devils just like jena! no justice , no peace! black power.
  • "also bear in mind..."
  • it's not like mr. white just shot the kid. he's claiming they tried to grab the gun and in pulling away from them it went off. personally, i can't see what the prosecutor is on the side of the victim in this instance, typically they are supporting the homeowner. that hints of racism right there.
  • ""not guilty""
  • he was right by protecting his home and family.its not like by these youths trespassing that they would leave peacefully.i think the courts should be reminded of how we were lynched and know that if he didnt use the weapon to defend, being outnumbered he would have been one less black man to worry about.im mean what was he suppose to do?if he is in the wrong, then what the hell is "homeland security".if the youths were blacks or a form of terrorist, there wouldnt even been a trial.in my eyes he is right,y?the court system has little or no justice for us "blacks" anymore.
  • "it is what it is"
  • hey he did what any normal human being would have done to protect his family! i mean when will it ever end a black man protects his family by any means and gets shipped off to jail, but a white man protects his family and he is later put in history as a hero!!!!
  • "he was in the right"
  • i dont think he deserves no time in jail. in the state of arkansas u have the right to bare arms on your property. he didnt kno who they were when they came up to his yard yellin out n*gger and whateva! if that was me, i woulda done the same thang. i would have protected me and mines!!! so, in other words he did what he had to do!!!
  • "defending his home"
  • the other men that was with him better be glad this ain't mississippi. in this state it is state law saying that if you fear for life or defending your property you don't have to run to get away. these young men came to his house to start some sh**t. regardless the young man made a decision that cost him not be able to go home. this is suppose to be america were you home is that line that you work and build to say its yours. no one has the right to cross into your area and expect you to take it.
  • "difficult to call"
  • i've always believed that when folks take it upon themselves to show up unannounced and unwelcomed at someone's home, they are at the mercy of the homeowner. if someone breaks into my home and they catch a "hot one", am i to blame? if what white says is true and the teenagers showed up and immediately displayed threatening behavior, well...i don't condone violence but i'm all for self-defense. people have lost their minds and could care less about violating and intimidating others for no reason.
  • "bullies"
  • fortunately dealing with that situation reversed the usual outcome…. we should all have some form of defense… on occasions like that…. bullies would think twice! i’m a victim of modern electronic lynching and there’s no stopping them!
  • "s. happens"
  • there was no need for killing and there is no room for hatred but they exist. as long as they exist their will always be that the results of heatred is killing, it has been the keynote of america way of life. president gw bush has maintain this us mission statement written and signed in blood. bush 2001 - present
  • "poor black man"
  • although i was not present when the event occured. however, those boys came to that man's house with an alturnative mootive. clearly this man is from racial history. therefore, he reacted based on fear. i dont comdome the killing and my heart goes out the the families of the boys who died. some people are just stupid and must realize that you just can go around threating people. i just hope that he does not go to jail. it will takes good to shine light on this situation. there is a small part of me upset becasue people are still racist.
  • "unfortunate"
  • as a citizen this man had every right to protect his home...however....the boys, to my knowledge, were unarmed meaning that he could have easily locked his doors and called the police for assistance. now it might have been his first instinct to react with a weapon....but that does not justify his action.
  • "sad"
  • this is sad for all involved.
  • "candishon"
  • those kids had no business at that man's door. the prosecutors are trying to make them seem so innocent. everyone has the right to protect themselves especially at home.my heart goes out to him not to the so called victim
  • "ghost of the past"
  • this man should definitely not go to jail. it's a prime example of youth gone astray. if the children at the door where black this would be a clear case of self defense. this man has the painful memories of racial injustices burned into his mind. the ghost of his past wore hooded sheets and had a definite agenda to scare and kill. (sounds like terrorism to me). locking him up will serve no purpose, except to send a message that your pigmentation gives you the right to do whatever you want without repercusions.
  • "no justice...only just-us"
  • if this brother is found guilty, what message do you think that sends to a)black people and b)white people?
  • "never should come to trial..."
  • this is a travesty of justice, the case should never have come to trial. when those kids showed up at the door of this man, their intent to do harm was clear. as a result, the homeowner had the right to defend his life and property. it doesn't matter that they had no weapons, they felt their own bodies were enough, in numbers, to do what they came to do. if the lawyer can't get this man acquited, that lawyer is useless and needs a new job.
