Al Shearer grew up in Dayton, Ohio and attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. Always know to his peers as the class clown, while a senior in college, he was a disc jockey on a morning radio show that attracted a lot of attention regionally because of Al’s unusual flair for comedy.

Al was interested in being an on-air television correspondent and, one day, waltzed into the vice president of entertainment’s office of Black Entertainment Television (BET) while he was in the middle of a meeting and told him he had found his next on-air star. Al’s determined and gutsy approach paid off and he was cast as HITS in the incredibly successful BET series, "Hits From the Streets."
