Posted, February 29 - On the chorus to Flo-Rida’s #1 hit record “Low,” T-Pain croons about a female who wore Apple Bottom jeans. Whereas most rap artists use their music as a marketing tool or just shameless promotion for their own outside ventures, this particular shout-out was genuine. Flo Rida and T-Pain are just telling it like it is, paying homage to a particular woman whose curves have been accentuated by a clothing line founded by none other than multi-platinum hip-hop recording artist, Nelly.
Nelly launched his denim line and it quickly became a hit, much like his the music that he’s been making since he debuted his first album Country Grammar back in 2000. In 2003, Nelly teamed up with Yomi Martin and Ian Kelly to become partners in a clothing line. His goal was to create jeans that would cater to females of all shapes and sizes, but particularly those with curves that resembled, well, an apple.
Nelly started a nationwide model search for the “Apple Bottoms Girl,” to find a model that would represent his line. “The clothes should fit a woman, not a woman fit the clothes,” was his motto, and the contest became a huge success.
Almost five years later, Apple Bottoms has grown into more than just a denim jeans collection. In the spring of 2005, Nelly proved that he was thinking past jeans and “sweatsuits” (as his third album was titled)--debuting dresses, mini-skirts, and tops that season. Although many rap artists have transitioned into fashion, Nelly has stood out from the rest, making Apple Bottoms a household name. And while Nelly continues to set trends in hip-hop with his unique style and popular music, he is staying committed to fashion by hosting BET’s Rip The Runway this year, showcasing the hottest new looks from his own Apple Bottoms clothing line.
