Jada Pinkett Smith Clarifies Her Separation from Will Smith Ended Oscars Night

“That’s still my man,” she says.

Jada Pinkett Smith wants to set the record straight about one of the shocking revelations she shared ahead of the release of her memoir, Worthy.

Earlier this month, the actress stated in an NBC News interview with Hoda Kotb that she and her husband Will Smith live “completely separate lives” and had been separated for seven years, since 2016.

However, she has now revealed that they were only separated until the night of the 2022 Oscars, according to Hollywood Unlocked.

At a recent promotional event for her memoir, Pinkett Smith shared with the audience, “This is where the media wants to clamp on something and spin it all around, and I get it. Yes, we were separated for 7 years…UNTIL…Oscars night!”

During her interview with Kotb, the journalist asked the author to be “100 percent clear” in regard to her and Smith reconciling.

“Yes, we are working very hard to bring our relationship back together…back to a life partnership,” the “Girls Trip” star said.

“Here’s the thing about husband-wife marriage for me, my healing process. I came into that with very specific ideas that block me from seeing Will as who he is. He can’t be this perfect, idealized husband. I have to be able to accept him for the human that he is. He accepts me for the human that I am, and we want to love each other there.”

Last week, when speaking with Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show,” Pinkett Smith told the host, “That’s still my man,” when he asked if Smith was still her husband. “Uncoupling consciously is a really difficult thing,” she said, admitting that she wrestled with whether she wanted to be separated or divorced.

Will’s now-infamous attack on Chris Rock factored in their status change.

”Believe it or not, it’s crazy how intense events can bring people together. Because once the Oscars happened, Will and I got closer,” she said.

In her exclusive interview with PEOPLE, she also noted that she and Will weren’t “ready yet” to divorce.

“[We were] still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership…In regards to, how do we present that to people? We hadn’t figured that out,” Pinkett Smith said.
