Obama Meets With Newtown Victims’ Families

On Thursday President Obama met with the families of the Sandy Hook victims just before the six-month mark since the elementary school’s shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

President Obama has not disclosed his discussion with the families; however, he did mention the gun issue during a White House event on LGBT Pride Month.

"I'm not giving up the fight to keep our kids safe from gun violence," he said, adding later that, as with other issues, "sometimes this stuff takes time," reports USA Today.

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which took the lives of 20 first graders and six educators, has been a big part of the push in Congress for gun control legislation.

USA Today reports:

Obama and aides hope to revive a congressional plan to expand background checks on gun purchases. Senate opponents, mostly Republican, blocked a bill from moving to the floor in April.

Gun control supporters are also pushing a renewed ban on assault weapons and restrictions on the sizes of ammunition magazines. But those proposals currently appear to lack sufficient support in Congress.

Since the killings on Dec. 14, the families have been actively lobbying lawmakers on Capitol Hill to revive such gun control proposals.
