If You're Over 33, You Don't Listen to New Music
Are you over 33? Do you listen to new music? If you answered no, then this study by Skynet & Ebert was right. If you always find yourself saying, "Music was better back then," chances are you fit into this group of Spotify users who have given up listening to new music after a certain age.
"Two factors drive this transition away from popular music," the research reads. "First, listeners discover less-familiar music genres that they didn't hear on FM radio as early teens, from artists with a lower popularity rank. Second, listeners are returning to the music that was popular when they were coming of age — but which has since phased out of popularity."
In the chart displaying the findings, the age group that explores the freshest happenings in the music circuit is the 20s. The study also highlights that those in their teens listen more to what's topping the Billboard charts and as they age and get closer to their 30s, their willingness to discover new music and talent dwindles until it just disappears altogether.
Based on these results, it seems to be a fact that as people get older, they stop keeping up with popular music. Whether it be the responsibilities of parenthood, work, or just disinterest, it just becomes a chore after a while.
So, if you're over 33 and share these sentiments, don't fret — you're not alone. If you're younger and also feel this way, then, hey... let's say you have an old soul.
