Tory Lanez Says He “Still Cared” For Megan Thee Stallion and Called Her “Friend” In Court Before Judge Struck Down 10 Year Sentence

“I take full responsibility”, said the rapper.

On Tuesday (August 8), Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. But before the judge handed down his sentence, Lanez got some things off of his chest.

On the day of his sentencing, Lanez –whose legal name is Daystar Peterson–  appeared in the courtroom while wearing an orange jumpsuit, as he addressed the court. He apologized for his actions and took full responsibility for the 2020 shooting, as reported by NBC News in which the “Savage” rapper was shot in the foot after attending a party thrown by Kylie Jenner.

“If I could change it, I would, but I can’t,” he said. “Everything I did that night, I take full responsibility,” he added. “I truly am just trying to be a better person.”

According to preeminent court journalist Meghann Cuniff Lanez, she reported on Twitter that Lanez “spoke for several minutes” and that “He said he still cares about Megan [Thee Stallion].”

“He called her ‘someone I still care for dearly to this day’ regardless of what she may think of him. He said "the victim's my friend."

Cuniff also reported that Lanez talked about the bond he once shared with Megan Thee Stallion her over the loss of their mothers. “We both lost our mothers. We would sit there and drink, and drink until we got numb.” shared Lanez.

In addition, Lanez referenced his reactions following the aftermath of the night the incident occurred between both artists. He said, “I said some very immature things that I shouldn't have said. I revealed some secrets I shouldn't have revealed.”

After the sentence was handed down, Jose Baez –Lanez’s attorney–  addressed reporters, according to Complex. “We’re extremely disappointed that Tory did not get the sentence that we had certainly hoped for. I think the sentence handed down was incredibly harsh. I have seen cases of vehicular homicide and other cases where there’s death and the person still gets less than 10 years.”
