Every Song Maxwell Performed During His Medley At The 2021 ‘Soul Train Awards’
Maxwell has been in the music industry for over two decades and has given soul fans endless classic albums and even more iconic hits. He is a pioneer in the neo-soul genre, and his contribution to the art as an architect of sound proves why he was given the “Living Legend” honors.
On November 28, the Grammy-award winner accepted the “Legend” award at the 2021 Soul Train Awards held at the iconic World-Famous Apollo in Harlem, New York, presented by Jazmine Sullivan. The 48-year-old paid tribute to Soul Train creator, the late Don Corneilius, and other prominent figures in the industry, including his fellow music peers.
During his acceptance speech, the “Pretty Wings” singer recalled his difficult upbringing where he revealed, “We had food stamps. We had low-income housing. But we had a radio, and the radio was the window to my dreams.” He continued, “To be able to stand here before all of you and to be part of the community of R&B and soul music is truly the award that I’ve always wished for, but this literally is blowing my entire mind.”
He added, “I want to express my lasting gratitude, my longtime collaborations with Hod David and Stuart Matthewman, to my best friend and my business partner John D., and to Don Cornelius.
Following the emotional presentation, Maxwell returned to the stage where he gave a performance only worthy for the Soul Train Awards stage. The singer performed a medley of some of his iconic hits and even some new ones.
He started the night off with his debut single “…Til the Cops Come Knockin,” from Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. He went on to perform other classics such as “Bad Habits,” “Lifetime,” and “Sumthin’ Sumthin’” all while sprinkling in a bit of Soul Train-inspired freestyle throughout the mix. The singer later slowed things down a bit for a performance of his new single “OFF” before closing off with “Ascension.”
