Family-Friendly Summer Vacation Destinations

Here are our recommendations for great places to take your kiddie and crew for some fun and relaxation.

School's out, and it's family vacation season! Across the nation, families are headed out to spend time together and experience new adventures.

We've put our heads together to create a list of seven cool vacation spots where you can take your kiddos without breaking the bank. These locations also all have rich histories and cultures, which means the kids can still learn something new—even while school is out.

  • Orlando, FL

Orlando is home to Walt Disney World, comprised of parks like the Magic Kingdom and Epcot, as well as water parks. Close by Mickey and Minnie's home base is Universal Orlando, which offers Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Many sites like Booking.com and other third-party companies have vacation packages that can make the trip to Orlando economical. Disney is currently offering a 4-Day, 4-Park Magic Ticket Deal.

Guests can purchase a 4-Day, 4-Park Magic Ticket for $99 per day, plus tax (total price: $396 plus tax)—valid June 1 through September 29, 2023 (subject to blackout dates such as September 1 through September 4, 2023).

Travel blogger Askey Bonnaire is an Orlando resident and a Disney parks expert. Follow her on Instagram and on her travel blog to learn how she and her family of six experience Orlando.

  • Detroit, MI

Wait a minute—before you write off the Motor City, hear us out.

Detroit is home to many museums—including The Motown Museum, which is a fun place to learn more about the legacy of the legendary record label. The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is one of the premier Black history museums in the country. The Detroit Institute of Arts was named the best art museum nationwide in March. These attractions make the city a great destination for older kids.

Detroit is also close to several lakes and beautiful beaches for great water activities. Kensington Metropark is home to a multitude of recreation opportunities throughout the year. Up-and-coming restaurants, a do-it-yourself attitude, new hotels, scenic and social parks, public transit, bike lanes, and a walkable international riverfront redefine Detroit.

Check out Visit Detroit on Instagram for hotel recommendations and things to do.

  • The U.S. Virgin Islands

There is nothing like the sparkling blue water of the USVI. The three-island chain is made up of St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. The islands make for a great destination because this Caribbean destination is accessible without a passport.

The islands were influential in the slave trade and had a history as a popular port for pirates. There's even a 1679 watchtower on St. Thomas called Blackbeard's Castle, referencing the area's pirate history.

At St. John's, you can visit the ruins of the Catherineberg Plantation—which despite its beautiful and majestic locale—was a place that had enslaved people produce sugar. While the history is interesting, the islands are also home to a rich culture, amazing food, and fun things to do.

If you stay in St. Thomas, consider the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. The beachfront property is the only one of the four to offer a kids' club. The U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism has a great Instagram page with plenty of inspiration.

  • Bruce's Beach, California

If you plan to be in the Los Angeles area, visit Bruce's Beach. In 1912 and 1920, Willa Bruce bought two lots on Manhattan Beach. Soon after, Charles and Willa Bruce turned it into Bruce’s Lodge a seaside resort for Black beachgoers.

However, the city council used eminent domain to repossess the lots because the area was to be redeveloped as a public park. But, it sat dormant for years, with only a parking lot constructed decades later on the land.

In 2020, in the wake of a racial reckoning in the United States after the police killing of George Floyd, the county returned the land to the descendants of the Bruce family, who sold it back to the county for $20 million.

There are piers and other things to do near Bruce's Beach. But its biggest draw is its history and its story of justice delayed but not denied.

Additionally, while in the Los Angeles area, consider visiting Disneyland, Universal Studios, and many other amazing things there are to do in California. The Visit California Instagram page is a great resource.

  • The Inkwell, Martha's Vineyard

Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard, part of Massachusetts' Cape Cod Islands, is one of several historic African American summer resort communities along the Atlantic seaboard founded in the 1890s. The" Inkwell," or Town Beach in Oak Bluffs, is a popular area frequented by African Americans in the late nineteenth century.

While there, you can take a tour of the African American Heritage Trail and lounge near the turquoise water of Inkwell Beach.

The best places to stay on Martha's Vineyard are mostly short-term rentals like Airbnb or at a bed and breakfast cottage.

Martha's Vineyard is a frequent vacation spot for former President Obama, and Michelle Obama, and Black celebrities, so people-watching is a great summer activity there.

  • New Orleans, Louisiana

Even kids can let the good times roll in Nola. Visit the Audubon Zoo which has animals from around the world, including a rare white alligator. Mid-City has the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park and the Botanical Gardens, which offer many attractions for kids of all ages.

New Orleans is a tourist town which means that there are tons of hotel options from major chains to quaint Airbnbs —there's something for every family and budget.

No visit to Nola is complete without sampling the amazing cuisine. Kids will love the sweet, powdery sugar of beignets at Cafe Dumonde. Try lunch at Vue Orleans—which comes with an interactive New Orleans history lesson and an incredible view of the foot of Canal Street in the Four Seasons New Orleans.

Finish the day off with a twilight tour from French Quartour Kids, perfect for daring tweens and teens. They even offer ghost tours for the little ones, a "sounds of New Orleans" music tour, a Creole kids living history tour, and more.

Visit NewOrleans.com to plan your family-friendly trip to The Big Easy.

  • Denver, Colorado

Last but not least on our list is The Mile High City—Denver, Colorado.

Home to the 2023 NBA World Champion Denver Nuggets, the city has a lot to offer families looking for something different. With the Rocky Mountains as your backdrop—you can see and do a lot of cool outdoor activities.

Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater is one of the nation's most beautiful music venues. An equally beautiful hiking trail offers guided tours, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Spend an entire day at Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park with rides for kids of every size. The park has water rides, splash areas, a river, and waterslides.

On the dry side, there's a venue to watch a live show and carnival rides. The Downtown Aquarium is home to sharks, octopuses, otters, and fish of all stripes. The restaurant serves up good food around a 50,000-gallon tank, and the Aquarium even has "mermaids" who can be seen swimming with and teaching about sea life and conservation at Downtown Aquarium.

Denver has lots of options for accommodations as well. Check out the city's travel guide for some options.
