Kendrick Lamar to Lead the Lineup at Upcoming Global Citizen Festival in Rwanda

Move Afrika: Rwanda features a citizen-led campaign addressing continent-wide challenges like climate change, food security, and healthcare.

Kendrick Lamar is set to headline an upcoming Global Citizen festival later this year.

He will be the lead performer at Move Afrika: Rwanda on Dec. 6 at BK Arena in Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali, according to Pitchfork. It’s the first in a series of touring festivals that will expand across Africa in the years ahead.

Lamar and Dave Free's enterprise, pgLang, will oversee the curation of Move Afrika: Rwanda, as well as other Move Afrika events until 2028. pgLang’s goal with Move Afrika is “to inspire local youth and artists to unlock their creativity. We hope to curate an immersive experience that empowers various communities and cultures across Africa and around the world for a lifetime.”

In collaboration with the Rwanda Development Board, Kigali will host the event every year for the next five years. The plan is to include a new country in the tour each year, aiming to reach five countries by 2025.

“I am honored and humbled to play a meaningful role that supports new age global efforts to deal with health inequity, challenge poverty, and empower women and girls,” said Global Citizen’s Africa Patron, Tshepo Mahloele, in a press release.

“The neglect of these predicaments, including global warming, have a detrimental effect on the prospects of the citizens of Africa and this situation cannot be allowed to continue unabated. I am happy that the Global Citizen movement has reignited the debate about these critical matters and that it is continuing to keep Africa top of mind by having Move Afrika: Rwanda.”

Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans told the Associated Press that Lamar's BK Arena show will be funded by donations and sponsorships. The hope is that the Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper will inspire young Africans.

“Move Afrika is about social enterprise – and over time, it provides certainty to our vendors and partners, enabling them to scale and expand,” Evans said.

“Our goal is that this tour will spur the growth and development of small businesses across the region to deliver both our events and many more year round, as other artists take advantage of the tour routes.”
