5 Classic Projects That Won 'Album of Year' At Past Soul Train Awards

These classic albums have all taken home the prestigious honor.

Several huge awards were handed out during the 2021 Soul Train Awards. Rapper Yung Bleu took home the “Best New Artist” award while Silk Sonic took home three of the most significant honors that night: “Song of the Year,” “Video of the Year,” and the “Ashford and Simpson Songwriter” award for the hit single “Leave the Door Open” off the debut album An Evening with Silk Sonic.

Soulful songstress Jazmine Sullivan had the second biggest night earning two wins. After taking home the first award of the night, “Best R&B/Soul Female Artist,” the “Lost Ones” singer returned to the stage to accept the trophy for “Album of the Year” for her fourth studio album Heux Tales.

  • Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

    1999 was a big year for the Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter. The “Everything, Everything” singer earned four awards at the Soul Train Awards, including “Album of the Year,” “Best R&B/Soul or Rap Album”, and “Best R&B/Soul Album Female”.

  • Beyoncé - I Am… Sasha Fierce

    The global superstar accepted the “Album of the Year” award for her project  I Am… Sash Fierce. The Grammy-award-winning songstress won this award three times. She won the title again in 2014 for her self-titled project Beyoncé, then a third time in 2016 for Lemonade.

  • Bruno Mars - 24K Magic

    Before taking home the “Song of the Year” award at the 2021 Soul Train Awards alongside Anderson.Paak, Bruno took home the “Album of the Year” award at the 2017 ceremony for his 24K Magic. The project went on to win 7 Grammy awards, including “Album of the Year.”

  • Jazmine Sullivan - Heaux Tales

    Jazmine was a repeat winner taking home two trophies at the 2021 Soul Train Awards for her latest project Heaux Tales, beating out several other top contenders, including Wizkid’s Made In Lagos and H.E.R’s Back of My Mind. The album also earned the songbird a Grammy nomination for “Best R&B Album.”

  • Lizzo - Cuz I Love You

    In 2019, Lizzo accepted the “Album of the Year” award for her third studio project, Cuz I Love You. The 11-song package featured chart-topping singles including “Juice” and “Tempo” featuring Missy Elliott.
