Lake Los Angeles , Lucky Win Urbanworld Film Festival
The winners of this year's Urbanworld Film Festival have officially been crowned. After four days of screenings, panel discussions and other special events — kicked off by the world premiere of Gina Prince-Bythewood's Beyond the Lights — the fest's top prizes go to Lake Los Angeles (Best Narrative Feature) and Lucky (Best Documentary).
Other winners include Nijla Baseema Mu’min, who won Best Screenplay for her script NOOR (along with a $5000 prize furnished by BET Networks), and Albert Espinosa's Pitahaya for Best Short Film. Honorable mentions went to narrative feature In the Morning and documentary Sewing Hope, narrated by Forest Whitaker.
Highlights of this year's festival included a behind-the-scenes look at Ava DuVernay's upcoming drama Selma, along with a Q&A with the director and star David Oyelowo, and a sneak peek of Addicted with a panel discussion with director Bille Woodruff, writer Zane and star Boris Kodjoe.
