Black + Iconic: Victor J. Glover Jr.

Morgan State University junior Laila explains the significance of the astronaut's pioneering missions into space and his upcoming moon mission.

In 2013, Victor Glover was chosen to work as an astronaut by NASA’s Astronaut Selection Board. Less than a decade later, in 2021, he became the first Black crew member to live aboard the International Space Station for an extensive period of time. He is one of only 15 Black people who have been sent to space by the U.S.

Currently, he is working on NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to land the first woman and person of color on the moon. He will serve as pilot for the mission’s Artemis II, which is intended to collaborate with international partners and eventually set up a more lengthy establishment on the moon. That will serve as the first piece of a more complicated endeavor to get humanity to Mars.

Fun fact: Victor Glover is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.
