How to plan a trip and handle challenges that can arise from your first getaway.
Taking a trip with your significant other for the first time can be an exciting but sometimes stressful step. Not only must you contend with two sets of interests and personality quirks, but you also want to make sure that being together for days on end doesn't lead you to grow sick of each other. Here are some tips on traveling with your partner and making sure you both have a memorable time away.
Start the planning portion by discussing what you'd each like to get out of this trip. Are you in it for adventure or would you rather have a laid-back romantic getaway? Compromise will be key here so either try to find a middle ground that incorporates activities you'd each like to do or opt for one type of trip now and leave other ideas for future travels. Once you've decided on the trip's theme, have a chat about the budget. Be completely honest about what you can afford and how expenses will be split. Will it be 50-50 or will the person with a higher income chip in a bit more? Nothing kills the fun faster than being halfway through the trip only to realize that your partner has run out of money and can't do much for the rest of the time.
On the Road
Keep travel stress to a minimum by taking care of yourself with enough rest, food, comfy clothes and good communication. Check in and be much more gentle with each other when annoyances arise; cut out the pride and strive to find a solution instead of proving who's right. Remember that while this is a trip you've taken together, it's still cool to spend some time apart. That gives you each a breather and a chance to pursue activities that the other wasn't interested in participating in. Also, play to each person's strong suit by taking on tasks you excel in. Are you a human GPS? Then grab the map and guide the way. Traveling together is a great way to shake things up and see how you act in a different environment away from your usual routines so use this opportunity to learn more about your partner.
Make the magic last a little longer by reliving your travel memories with each other and sharing stories with loved ones. If you've discovered gentler ways to treat each other while abroad, then continue nurturing those new behaviors once home. Don't take it personally if you find that your partner would like some "me time" after the trip; taking a couple days to indulge yourself and slowly settle back into your regular routines will make the crash back into reality much easier to bear.
