Newsflash: it ain't easy working for Kanye West. The bodyguard the rapper reportedly fired for getting a little too close to his wife, Kim Kardashian, is sharing his side of the story, that he was indeed fired by Yeezy and that the Life of Pablo rapper is one of the most difficult people he's ever served. (This coming from a guy who's been a Hollywood bodyguard for years.)
The New York Daily News reports Kanye went into a jealous rage when well-known celebrity bodyguard and former Chippendales dancer Steve Stanulis was spotted in Kim's suite at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, apparently chatting her up hours before the Met Gala. Sources said West fired Stanulis on the spot, with no explanation.
According to an interview Stanulis gave to the Daily Mail, he was indeed up in Kim's room, but only for a brief moment to speak to her assistant about a possible change in plans about traveling to the Gala.
"As I was walking up to Kim and the room (within touching distance of Kardashian), Kanye walked by," Stanulis says. "He went to the door and slammed it. I thought that was Ok. So I went back downstairs. I told the driver I had no idea what was going on."
Moments later, someone from Kanye's staff came downstairs to fire Stanulis. "I had no intention on hitting on Kim Kardashian. I am happily married. I got enough problems in the world and three young kids, so that was not my intent," he says. "She's a very beautiful girl, very attractive. But obviously it was just to see if they were going to get to the Met Gala at a particular time." He continued, "If I am a handsome guy, a Chippendale and in a decent shape and he is threatened by that… would it surprise me? No."
Stanulis, who had worked for the Wests a handful of times before, says he was warned about Kanye's erratic behavior. "I was told before I took the work that I had to be thick skinned and prepared for anything because the littlest thing could trigger him," he says. "He's a bit condescending and when I was in the studio with him, people were walking on eggshells around him. It is almost like he can turn on a dime any second."
Kim, he adds, is "sweet and nice" but no treat either. Stanulis recounts an incident during the last Fashion Week, when he was hired to look after Kim and her two kids, when he was told to back off after simply introducing himself to the reality star as the guy who was going to be taking care of her that day.
"Just because you have status, doesn't give you the right to talk to people in a certain way," says Stanulis. "This guy, you could be working with him for 17 hours and sitting in a restaurant with him. You would think he would say, 'Hey you want something to drink?' but it was nothing. It just blew my mind. I would say he is probably the most self-absorbed person I have ever met in my life."
And there you have it: what it's like to really keep up with the Kardashian-Wests.
