Tika Sumpter shared some shocking news on social media last night.
The actress revealed that her mother, a retired corrections officer with no criminal record, was arrested in North Carolina... over $10 in overdue library books. Sumpter took to Twitter to share the insane story.
Sumpter blasted the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield in Smithfield, North Carolina, over the incident, calling it a "legal scam" and even extracting a political message — pay attention to your local elected officials as much as you do your president:
Make sure you turn in your library books North Carolina! My mom was just arrested for having a late fee of 10 dollars on an overdue book!— Tika Sumpter (@iamtikasumpter) November 14, 2016
Presidential elections matter, but your local elections matter just as much.— Tika Sumpter (@iamtikasumpter) November 14, 2016
Thankfully, Tika's mom was released without much further ado — and we hope the library dropped the fine, too. But nobody should be treated like this in the United States of America. SMH.
