Seven Reasons Why Ruth Negga Should Receive an Oscar Nomination for 'Loving'
Oscar nominations are around the corner and we're already championing a favorite — Ruth Negga, the Ethiopian-Irish actress whose performance in the film Loving is earning praise by critics and moviegoers alike.
Without resorting to the hysterics and fake tears typical of emotional biopics, Negga played unwitting Virginia activist Mildred Loving with a quiet reserve rarely seen in cinema these days. Yet, still, she made us feel something deep for the woman whose marriage was put on trial before the Supreme Court, and ultimately led the way for dismantling anti-miscegenation laws in the United States.
Here are seven reasons why Ruth deserves her Oscar nomination this year:
She's an Ethiopian-Born, Ireland-raised actress who played a southern woman to perfection
Talk about range! We've waited a long time for the definitive biopic on the couple, and surely many actresses would've killed for the chance to play her. Negga had a lot on her shoulders with this role, and she executed it beautifully.
She did justice to the memory of Mildred Loving
Mrs. Loving was, by all measures, one of the most significant figures in civil rights activism in our history. Midred would've been proud of the way she's portrayed in Loving.
Her chemistry with joel edgerton was amazing
Loving doesn't have any huge, melodramatic set pieces, but the quiet chemistry between Negga and her on-screen husband was palpable throughout. Not easy to pull off without swells of music and fake tears!
She's already the belle of awards season
From the Independent Spirit Awards to the Golden Globes, Negga has already been nominated for a lot of hardware this year. An Oscar would really be the perfect end to a stellar season, wouldn't it?

Hopefully the Academy recognizes game when it sees it.
Hollywood Needs Ruth Negga
It's no secret that it's especially hard for a Black actress to make it in Hollywood. Like Lupita Nyong'o, Jennifer Hudson and others before her, an Oscar would make Negga a true contender for the A-list — bringing a much-needed woman of color into Hollywood's higher ranks just as she's getting ready to embark upon the biggest year of her career.
She Gave one of the best performances of the year – Period
Ultimately, this is what matters most. Hundreds of critics and thousands of moviegoers agree that Negga deserves her nod. Period.
