When Celebrities Throw Shade

Stars making little digs at their peers.

Nia Long and Kendrick Lamar - Celebs are usually super careful about what they say in public, but sometimes a little shade slips out. Our list of celebrities throwing shade starts with Nia Long, whose look said it all on the BET Awards red carpet. When the self-proclaimed "King of New York" tried to crash Nia's interview to give her a hug, she just left him hanging. Guess not everybody loves K-Dot. Chris Brown and Wendy Williams - Wendy Williams throws shade for a living — and America loves her for it — but sometimes the celebrities she dishes on throw it right back at her. After the talk show queen dished about Breezy with blogger Perez Hilton on her show, Brown took to Twitter to blast off. The F.A.M.E. singer called Williams a "man" and a "wicked witch," and referred to the pair as "two buff chicks." Keep it classy, Chris. Malcolm D. Lee and Tyler Perry - The Best Man Holiday director learned everything he knows from his cousin and mentor, Spike Lee, including throwing shade. Lee let the claws out when he said of fellow filmmaker Perry, "He's interested in commerce, not art." He later qualified that he sees nothing wrong with that, but the diss is clear. Angela Bassett and Halle Berry - Actress and Yale graduate Bassett threw a passive-aggressive diss toward Halle Berry when Bassett revealed that she turned down Berry's role in Monster's Ball because she felt the part was demeaning and stereotypical. "It's about character, darling," she said. "I wasn't going to be a prostitute on film. I couldn't do that because it's such a stereotype about Black women and sexuality." Well, Berry has an Oscar on her shelf for playing the part, so we think she had the last laugh on this one. (Photos from left: Jason Kempin/Getty Images,Christophe Clovis/ Maxppp /Landov)

President Obama and the Kardashians - Forget Iran, poverty or AIDS. President Obama seems to think the biggest threat to America is the Kardashians. "We weren't exposed to things we didn't have in the same way kids these days are," the president said. "Kids weren't monitoring every day what Kim Kardashian was wearing, or where Kanye West was going on vacation, and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success." Not exactly a flattering comment, but Kim and Kanye have to be at least a little proud that they're on the president's radar. (Photos from left: Shawn Thew-Pool/Getty Images, BRIAN BOWEN SMITH/ E! Russell Simmons and Andre Leon Talley - Andre Leon Talley may rule the fashion world, but he's not going to diss Russell Simmons without getting an earful in return. The Vogue editor-at-large said earlier this year that Uncle Rush should be banned from New York Fashion Week because of his controversial "Harriett Tubman Sex Tape," and Simmons promptly snapped back. "I've done more for Blacks in fashion and gay rights than you," he tweeted the fashionista. "Can I get a break/seat?" Rihanna and Ciara - Rih Rih and CiCi's beef goes back two years, when the "Body Party" singer announced on TV that she "didn't think Rihanna was very nice" when the two met at a party. Rih snapped back on Twitter with, "My bad Ci. Did I 4get to tip u? U gangsta huh? Haaa." The insults flew back and forth for a couple of years, with Ciara even trying to squash the beef by sending positivity Rih Rih's way during a TV appearance, but the fiesty Bajan wasn't having it. "Why am I still the main topic of her interviews!!" she tweeted. Lesson learned: keep your mouth shut about Rihanna. (Photos from left: pacific coast news, Kevin Winter/Getty Images for PCA)

Prince and Justin Timberlake - Comparisons between Prince and Justin Timberlake may be extremely flattering to JT, but the Artist Formerly Known isn't having it. “For whoever is claiming that they are bringing sexy back, sexy never left!” the Purple One declared back in 2007. To his credit, Timberlake did start it when he squatted down low to imitate his diminutive idol at that year's Golden Globes. Madonna and Janet Jackson - The two pop divas have admitted mutual respect for each other today, but back in the '90s there was no love between Madge and Damita. As the story goes, in '93 Janet told VIBE, "If I don't have anything nice to say, I won't say anything at all. But if I did dislike Madonna then I'd have a good reason." Madonna responded in 1994 on MTV, "I’ve never met the woman; I don’t know anyone she knows. I’m mystified. Maybe she’ll tell me one day.” These classy ladies never had an all-out read session, but it was all about the shade. Whitney Houston and Madonna - While Madonna may have shaded Janet, leave it to the late, great Whitney to keep it classy and sassy. After Madonna teamed up with Babyface, Nippy reminded MTV in 1996, "Before Madonna, it was Face and I. OK? Do I have to say anymore." Nonetheless, the two always had mutual respect for each other. After Whitney passed, Madonna said, "I just remember being extremely envious of her and also touched by her innocence.”(Photos from left: Marcel Thomas/FilmMagic/Getty Images, Jason Merritt/Getty Images)

Omarosa and Bethenny Frankel - The Celebrity Apprentice alums haven't been able to leave the competition behind them. Omarosa, not one to ever hold her tongue, mocked the talk show host's "mediocrity" due to her "white privilege"...while she was a guest on Bethenny's show.   (Photos from left: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for WWE,Desiree Navarro/WireImage/Getty Images)

Kelly Clarkson and Miley Cyrus - Miley Cyrus got plenty of people talking with her raunchy VMA's performance, and even got good-girl Clarkson to throw shade. "Just saw a couple performances from the VMA's last night. 2 words....pitchy strippers." While she didn't exactly call out Miley by name, we knew who she was talking about — and that is what you call shade!
