Paul Phillips wants to create a coffee table book by March 2013.
When Psychology Today published a controversial article on its website in 2010 claiming that Black women were the least attractive, Harlem photographer Paul Phillips wanted to prove otherwise. He's started a photo essay titled Beauty in Black and hopes to create a coffee table book with 30 to 40 images that showcase how beauty and spirit permeates through Black women both inside and out.
“As a black man who is married to a beautiful black woman, I didn’t get mad, I got busy,” he said. “I am creating a photo essay that will portray the beauty of African-American women of all shades, shapes and sizes.”
Black women of all ages from around the country will be featured in the project to cover themes like hairstyles, skin tones and body images. The call for participants will go out by word of mouth, via online posts and the media.
To raise funds and bring his vision to life, Phillips has created a page on Kickstarter.com and hopes to accomplish the project by March 2013.
