Boxing phenomenon Joe “Smokin’ Joe” Frazier became the world heavyweight champion when he knocked out Jimmy Ellis after five rounds in New York City. He would hold the title until Jan. 22, 1973, when he was bested by George Foreman in Kingston, Jamaica.
