Newt Gingrich

Politician Newt Gingrich is the former Republican congressman from Georgia who served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995-1999. As a co-author of the Contract With America, a campaign document that outlined the GOP’s plan for governing when elected, he was a central figure and the face of the Republican opposition to Democratic rule in the 1990s. He has authored more than 20 books and is widely recognized for his innovative policy ideas. In May of 2011, he announced his candidacy for Republican presidential nominee for the 2012 election, and promoted unity within the GOP ranks during successive debates.
