Following Donald Trump winning the presidency, leaders of tech companies have been sending mass employee memos in an effort to console and comfort their staff.
Tim Cook, for example, sent Apple employees a message urging them to "move forward together," while Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg said he was "feeling hopeful" while watching the election results with his daughter. The C.E.O. of Grubhub, Matt Maloney, however, took a much more direct approach, saying that if any of his employees support the politics of Trump, they may as well resign.
"I absolutely reject the nationalist, anti-immigrant and hateful politics of Donald Trump and will work to shield our community from this movement as best I can," Maloney said in his company-wide e-mail. "If you do not agree with this statement then please reply to this email with your resignation because you have no place here. We do not tolerate hateful attitudes on our team."
He also explained in his memo that if Trump had hypothetically ever worked at Grubhub, his behavior would not have been tolerated.
"While demeaning, insulting, and ridiculing minorities, immigrants, and the physically/mentally disabled working for Mr. Trump, I want to be clear that this behavior—and these views—have no place at Grubhub,” the memo continued.
According to a report, "almost 20 percent" of his employees thanked Maloney for taking such a firm stance.
His actions, however, were not commended by shareholders, with shares dropping by 5 percent yesterday (Nov. 11).
In a statement to Forbes, Maloney shared that none of his employees came forward to resign after receiving the memo.
"I want to clarify that I did not ask for anyone to resign if they voted for Trump,” he clarified. “I would never make such a demand. To the contrary, the message of the email is that we do not tolerate discriminatory activity or hateful commentary in the workplace, and that we will stand up for our employees."
Some Twitter users didn't take too kindly to Maloney's bold statements either, with some saying they'll never order delivery via Grubhub again.
