We've got bad news, #baddie is one of the many hashtags currently restricted by Instagram. And if you're a #goddess, that's fine, just don't hashtag that one either.
Nick Drewe, a writer and programmer who studies social networks on The Data Pack, recently compiled a list of banned and restricted hashtags on Instagram. The dataset certainly encompasses the expected (#balls) — and the not-so expected (#gloves).
"Instagram appears to have changed the way it censors hashtags now," Drewe explained to The Huffington Post via email. "There are two levels of censorship. Hashtags can either have an outright block, and return no results, or a sort of 'soft,' often more temporary censorship with around 30 results."
So in other words, Instagram can completely ban a hashtag — meaning nothing will show up when you try and search that topic — or it can prevent certain images from appearing on those tags.
So say, for instance, you post a picture of your boyfriend using the completely banned hashtag #instasex. Tapping that hashtag after you publish the image will lead you to nothing other than an empty page.
Nonetheless, if you posted that same picture of your boyfriend and used the hashtag #foreplay, you may find that it doesn't appear on that search page while other photos do. Instagram will partially censor a hashtag if it's recently been attached to problematic images.
Instagram is certainly everyones favorite app to waste time on, and the social network typically has a "top post" and "most recent" section for hashtags. If a hashtag is being abused, the app will remove that "most recent" section and only show top posts, a Instagram representative revealed.
