The police officer-involved shooting deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile have social media, as well as those protesting in the streets, on edge.

Both shootings were caught on camera and both brought into question whether the victims of the shooting were actually posing a threat to law enforcement. Many in hip-hop have reacted to what’s happened over the last 48 hours, but perhaps most surprising is Drake's.

The Toronto rapper isn’t one who usually speaks about social issues, but late last night (July 6) he did. Taking to Instagram, Drizzy had questions as to why this cycle of violence continues and expressed fear that it could happen to him or his loved ones.

“Last night when I saw the video of Alton Sterling being killed it left me feeling disheartened, emotional, and truly scared. I woke up this morning with a strong need to say something,” he wrote. “Concerned for the safety of my family, my friends, and any human being that could fall victim to this pattern… I believe things can change for the better. Open and honest dialogue is the first step.

“It’s impossible to ignore that the relationship between black and brown communities and law enforcement remains as strained as it was decades ago,” he also relayed. “No one begins their life as a hashtag. Yet the trend of being reduced to one continues.”

The Game, Fabolous, Chuck D and Tyga are among the myriad of those in the music industry to speak out in solidarity for Sterling and Castile. Check out Drake’s heartfelt message about the recent shootings below.
