Gucci Mane: 'I Was a Drug Addict'

His prison sentence helped him realize a lot about himself.

Gucci Mane has had a monumental couple of months following his release from prison.

In addition to losing weight while locked up, the rapper recently dove into some deeper subjects, including his newfound sobriety, during an in-depth profile with The New York Times.

“It’s been tough to be a Gucci fan,” he says, during the interview. “It’s been tough to be a Gucci friend, a Gucci sibling, a Gucci girlfriend or a Gucci partner. I done took people through a lot.”

The rapper then goes on to say he didn’t realize his drug addiction was as severe or as real as it was until he was arrested and sentenced in jail.

"In hindsight I see it for what it was: I was a drug addict…” the rapper continues. “I was naive to the fact that I was numb.”

He also shared that he went through some serious withdrawal, saying that your body just “[craves] lean bad,” and as a result, the entire feeling is simply "rude and toxic."

After overcoming the stages of withdrawal, the rapper then chose to get his body and his mind right. He shares that he started reading self-help books and ended up losing "dozens of pounds."

The best part? He’s still keeping at this new lifestyle and is staying away from his old demons.

"Anybody can do the stuff Gucci used to do," he says. "Can y'all copy living how I'm living? Can y'all copy getting y'all life together?"

His new album, Everybody Looking, drops this Friday on July 22 and promises to show us more of this new Gucci. We’re definitely here for it.
