Nicki Minaj Is Reportedly Being Targeted by a Mental Health Organization

"Nobody would make fun of a cancer patient, and mental illness is an illness like any other."

Anyone who knows Young Money’s reigning rap queen Nicki Minaj knows her for her witty and buoyant charisma. It’s what keeps the loyalty of the “Feeling Myself” femcee's devoted Barbie fan base.

Unfortunately, a recent video she posted of her interaction with a reportedly mentally ill woman has some people believing she used her platform with negative intent.

On Monday (Dec. 5), Nicki posted a video of her usual out-and-abouts as she strolled through Miami. When she came across a woman who, from the video, seemed increasingly agitated and defiant, Nicki whipped out her camera and began recording her.

In the video, the woman seems to yell something angrily toward Nicki as she walks down the South Beach strip. Nicki then responds with, “What you said? Miss?” as the woman continues yelling in contempt. Ms. Minaj bursts into a fit of giggles, asking, “What did I do?” and beckoning the woman to “come here.”

By the looks of the video, it isn’t blatantly obvious that the woman, who South Beach residents said is a known mentally ill citizen in the community, has mental challenges, which might have led Nicki to believe that the woman was simply upset with her for no given reason.

While the Queens-bred rapper seemingly had no knowledge of who the woman was or why she began yelling at her, she also doesn’t return the woman’s malice. That didn’t stop the Miami chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-Miami) from shaming her for the video.

In an official statement released to TMZ, the organization calls Nicki's behavior a result of the "stigma and ignorance" surrounding the mentally ill community.

"It is sad to see a big star like Nicki Minaj using her influence among young people in a negative manner such as this," the statement says. "Nobody would make fun of a cancer patient, and mental illness is an illness like any other. Also, Minaj invaded a woman’s privacy, and in so doing dehumanized and objectified her."

Nicki has yet to explain her intention behind the video yet, but let's hope she clears up any misunderstandings sooner rather than later.
