Future Refused To Perform In Virginia Following Charlottesville White Supremacist Rally

“Please understand my heart means well…”

The country is still dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy that was sparked in Charlottesville. In addition to the protests and dismantling of various historical statues, the displays of hatred and white supremacy have visibly affected the music industry. Future seems to be the first artist to make the bold decision to not perform in Virginia following the recent events. The trap star hopped on Twitter on Thursday (Aug. 17), to explain his reasoning to fans.

“Out of respect for the tragic events I felt it wasn’t rite to perform at this time… Please understand my heart  mean well VA,” Future tweeted. The “Mask Off” artist was reportedly supposed to perform in Charlottesville at the John Paul Jones Arena on Aug. 19, on his current Future Hndrxx Tour. Lil Yachty was also previously announced as the special guest for the night.

Future continued his thread on Twitter, assuring his fans that he cares about them and will return to the city eventually. “VA is important to me & always will be. I'm coming very soon,my word! Love Forever,” he added.

While the rapper’s move was risky, many of his fans couldn’t help but acknowledge his bravery and agree with his decision. After all, what has been going on in Charlottesville is a serious matter. One woman, Heather Heyer, tragically lost her life on Aug. 13 after a white supremacist ran over her and dozens of others with his car. Nineteen others who were protesting against a group of Nazis were reportedly injured. The man responsible for the terrorist attack was later identified as James Alex Fields Jr. of Ohio. Fields has reportedly been charged with second-degree murder in Heyer’s case, NBC News confirms.

Future now joins a crew of musicians, celebrities and influencers who have spoken out about Charlottesville. John LegendZendayaPharrell Williams, and many others have used their platforms to speak up against hatred and violence. It is most likely a matter of time before others follow Future’s lead.
