Rap is performance, certainly, but it's also a literary art form. Some artists have notebooks upon notebooks of written rhymes, while others have libraries stored away in their heads. Some, like Common, Jay Z,T.I., Pharrell, 50 Cent and Lil Wayne, are even taking their words and publishing memoirs and self-help manuals, which memorialize not only their individual legacy but also that of this culture.
