Recovery: Rappers Who Have Battled Substance Abuse

These rap stars fought to beat the habit.

T.I. (@tip) - T.I. recently told Stephen A. Smith that he's taking his Atlanta Falcons over the Eagles this year. He also said that the recently released Ochicino would be a good pickup for them. Hopefully Tip will take to Twitter to defend both of those (rather outlandish) statements.  (Photo: Jeff Daly/PictureGroup)

T.I.\r - Shortly after serving a year-and-a-day-long sentence on gun charges, T.I. and wife Tiny were arrested on September 1, 2010 for possession of ecstasy and other drugs. In a plea to the court, Tip admitted that he had a drug problem. In a recent interview with Billboard magazine the rapper thanked fellow rap star Eminem for helping him kick the habit. \r\r(Photo: Jeff Daly/PictureGroup)

Eminem\r - In August 2005, Em canceled the European leg of his Anger Management 3 Tour to enter a drug rehabilitation treatment for a "dependency on sleep medication." After a long break, the rap star returned to music in May 2009 with the release of Relapse, then the following year he shared the experiences of his long journey back from drug problems on the acclaimed album, Recovery.\r\r(Photo: Scott Gries/PictureGroup)

Lil’ Wayne on His Love of Skateboarding\r  - "Everybody asks me that question, like, 'What made you start skating?' Yeah, well, I don't know. I'm still like a kid, because unfortunately my childhood was raped away from me because I became a star ...”\r (Photo: Johnny Louis/WENN.com)

Lil Wayne\r - In January 2008, Lil Wayne was charged with possession of narcotic drugs for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, misconduct involving weapons and possession of drug paraphernalia. Since completing his year-long sentence in New York's Riker's Island, Weezy claims that he's been abiding by his three-year probation, which forbids any drug use.\r(Photo: Johnny Louis/WENN.com)

DMX\r - There have been many ups and downs in DMX's struggle with drugs and although it seemed all his problems were coming to an end in 2002 when he entered a rehab to treat his drug addiction, he quickly relapsed and was arrested numerous times over the last nine years on drug charges. More recently, X says that he's back on the straight and narrow, but only time will tell. \r\r(Photo: Jeff Daly/PictureGroup)

Flavor Flav  \r - As an integral member of the popular rap group Public Enemy, Flavor Flav was notorious for his outspokenness, outlandish behavior and insatiable drug problem. Gucci Mane - After years building a name — and a criminal record — for himself on the talent-packed streets of Atlanta, Gucci Mane burst onto the mainstream with 2009's "Wasted." G-Dep\r - Once a promising member of Diddy's Bad Boy Records, G-Dep could not capitalize on stardom due to years of drug use. After a visibly intoxicated G-Dep walked into a police station and confessed to a murder 17 years prior and later recanted, the straight-laced wife of the former Bad Boy went on record with VIBE magazine to talk about his drug dependency. She claimed to have taken him to "rehab after rehab" and cast doubt on his murder confession, saying that she isn't sure it's true because he once professed to be Jesus Christ during one of his binges. \r\r(Photo: Denise Truscello/WireImage)

Kid Cudi - In September 2010, Grammy-nominated rapper Kid Cudi confessed to battling a cocaine addiction caused by his inability to deal with life in the spotlight. Earlier that year, he'd been arrested in New York for possession of liquid cocaine (whatever that is) but now after admittedly "high-fiving death a couple times" and the birth of his son, Cudi apparently gave it all up.  (Photo: Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Bacardi)

Vanilla Ice\r - Life outside the limelight wasn't as bright for Vanilla Ice. To deal, he began abusing ecstasy, cocaine and heroin before attempting suicide on July 4, 1994 by heroin overdose. After the brush with death, he chose life.\r(Photo: Dave Hogan/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

"Bling-Bling" - It may have been Chopper City in the Ghetto but BG sure had a lot of "Bling Bling" –– diamonds and jewels, way back in 1999. The Cash Money Millionaires became known for their obnoxious, iced-out accessories, as the stunna rapped, "Everytime you come around you see me, bling bling. Pinky ring worth about 50, bling bling…" The phrase almost immediately gained national attention. "Bling-Bling" was added to the Oxford English dictionary in 2003, and transcended from the rap world to fashion and beyond. Even the Los Angeles Lakers got in on the trend, their 2000 championship ring was saturated in diamonds and had the phrase etched into the sides.(Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images)

BG - Unfortunately rapper BG became known for being the resident druggie out of the original Cash Money crew. However, for the release of his 2002 album Livin' Legend, he announced that in addition to splitting with the label he'd also ditched his drug problem. (Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images)
