Generation Gap: When Old and New Rappers Beef
Why does rap eats its young? Or do we eat the old? Either way, rap has been plagued by intergenerational warfare ever since Kool Moe Dee battled Busy Bee. Confident, up-and-coming young heads say old heads don't want to make way for new styles and new faces; wizened vets say youngbloods don't respect the architects or the unspoken rules of the game. More shots were fired in this drawn-out battle earlier this week, when Shyne dissed the almost universally acclaimed major-label debut from Kendrick Lamar, good kid, m.A.A.d. city. "Kendrick Lamar is talented with a lot of potential but his album is traaaaash!" Shyne tweeted last night. "Beats is trash," he later explained in an interview on Hot 97. "And once your beats are trash, you're finished." Shyne said he "didn't attack [Kendrick] as an individual," but still, those are some strong words about another artist's work.
