1. 'No Woman No Cry'

The quintessential love song for hard times, this masterpiece, perhaps Marley's most popular, is as powerful today as it was in 1974, when an upbeat version was first recorded for Natty Dread; or in 1975, when the song found perfection in the now-familiar live version; or in 1996, when Wyclef did his famous cover with the Fugees. Bob may have penned the gospel-tinged classic, but he gave co-writing credit to his childhood friend Vincent Ford, who ran a soup kitchen in Trenchtown, the rough section of Kingston, Jamaica, famously named in the lyrics. The royalties from the song ensured that the soup kitchen could stay open and keep feeding the hungry. One love, indeed.
