Roxanne Shante vs. UTFO

The first major rap beef between the sexes was the infamous "Roxanne War" of the mid-'80s. After UTFO had a hit in 1984 with "Roxanne, Roxanne," which addressed a woman who was fronting on the group's advances, Roxanne Shante debuted with "Roxanne's Revenge," a confrontational diss track in which the teenage phenom pretended she was the woman UTFO was talking about. UTFO responded with "The Real Roxanne," and then several other groups got in the act, releasing their own Roxanne-themed tracks.
