The singer is getting attention she didn't receive when she was heavier.
You might think there’ll be some definitive answer at the end of this post, but, of course, there can’t be—because how many of us are going to be honest? The obvious PC answer is to say that our love of J-Hud isn’t about her size but her talent. Yet the Jenny Craig commercial that is in heavy rotation isn’t just popular because she is redoing a Nina Simone classic but because she looks insanely tiny and hot. How hot is Hudson? So hot that today, on the heels of the Oscars, there are blog posts asking “Jennifer Hudson vs. Halle Berry: Who’s Hotter?” No one asked that the first time she was at the ceremony, as a size-16 in an ill-chosen bolero. And no one seems concerned that the only two Black actresses to get significant red carpet attention are being pitted against each other, while all of the white actresses get to be fashion hits or misses on their own.
Now Halle’s competition is 80 pounds lighter than she was in Dreamgirls and recently told CNN, “At night I can't even sleep because I can't wait to see what I am going to wear the next day."
That’s great for Hudson, especially considering that after the tragedies she’s recently had that she can feel excited about anything. But for the rest of us, has the pop culture machine rendered us all so shallow that we think notes sound better when they’re wrapped in a toned, size-4 package? And, if so, it’s not Hudson but the rest of us who need a serious makeover—of our priorities.
