Lady GaGa Says Gay Love Is Genuine

The singer denies pandering to gays for success

For a person who admittedly goes out of her way to be as broad in appeal as possible, it’s not surprising to find that some are suspicious of Lady Gaga's motives. The pop star appeals the loudest to the gay community. However, a few wonder if she’s as loyal to her gay fan base as she claims.

To her credit, GaGa has done much in the way of advocating for the rights of the LGBT community. She’s consistently spoken out for AIDS Awareness, filmed PSAs against the discriminatory military policy, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and even delivered a speech at a gay rights rally in Washington D.C. More recently, GaGa ultimately cancelled a deal with Target after not agreeing to terms on how the company could aid LGBT charities in light of news that they donated to an anti-gay political candidate.

So is this really all a ploy for record sales? GaGa’s response is firm. “To say that I would use the gay community to sell records is probably one of the most ridiculous statements anyone can make about me as a person," she tells The Advocate. With noted frustration, she adds, “I would say the top thing I think about every single day of my life, other than my fans, loving the music, and my family being healthy, is social justice and equality.”
