Oscar-Schmoscar. For the 99% of the population that prefers car chases to period costumes and foreign accents, Spike TV brings us the Scream Awards. Celebrating the movies we like to see — as opposed to the ones we should see to sound smart at cocktail parties — the 2011 Scream Awards brought together the heroes and villains from the worlds of horror, fantasy and sci-fi on the Universal Studios backlot on Saturday.
Fans picked the night's winners — Darth Vader and Harry Potter from the world of fiction, Nicholas Cage and Robert Downey, Jr. from the human realm — which is set to air Tuesday as a two-hour special on Spike TV and VH1.
But the event was no boys club. Colombiana star Zoe Saldana presented Super 8 director JJ Abrams with the Best Sci-Fi Movie award, using her stage time to flex her guns for the audience, and catwoman Anne Hathaway collected the Most Anticipated Film award on behalf of The Dark Knight Rises.
Viewers will also get a peek at upcoming buzzy films like the Sherlock Holmes sequel and George Lucas's Red Tails, a drama about the Tuskegee airmen.
Just like the movies it feted the event seemed more popcorn than caviar, but a screaming good time was had by all.
