It seems everywhere you look, there is Common. Whether he’s acting on AMC’s period drama Hell on Wheels, promoting his book, One Day It Will All Make Sense, or talking about his pending album, The Dreamer, The Believer, the emcee seems unstoppable lately.

And now you can see him in animated form in the new film Happy Feet Two. On the occasion of the film’s release, Common spoke to HitFix about his special connection to the movie. “It’s fun and it’s still a good story, and you feel it, you feel the emotions of it because it is real situations that we experience as fathers, as children, as parents,” Common said. “I’m a father anyway, so I have a certain natural thing about being a father, but at the same token, just being with other artists and creating, we were able to come up with new things.” He plays Seymour, a penguin who helps his son find his voice as a rapper.

Common said he enjoyed the process of making the film. “It’s a joy to be able to say that I’m a penguin and go into your imagination and become that. We all at some point got that kid in us that wants to just allow our imaginations to be. That’s a really liberating thing to just go into your imagination.”

Common has definitely turned himself into a real slasher; we look forward to what else his imagination can do.
