Sherlock Holmes wins Sluggish Weekend

Here's a mystery for Sherlock Holmes to solve: where have all the movie-goers disappeared? The box office underperformed for the third weekend in a row, putting frown lines in the most Botoxed foreheads in Hollywood.

The second Sherlock film, Game of Shadows, topped the tepid charts, pulling in $40 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Doesn't sound so bad, unless you hold that number up against the $62.3 million the first one grossed, and the $50+ million analysts were expecting for this one.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked came in at an even more disappointing $23.5 million, far less than the original film and its Squeakuel.

There was one bright light in the weekend, though. Mi4: Ghost Protocol exceeded expectations in limited release, pulling in $13.6 million and a stellar $68.2 worldwide. Looks like Tom Cruise and Paula Patton's world tour paid off!
