While football fans spent the weekend on the couch, a surprisingly large number of young folks skipped wings and beer for an afternoon at the movies. Revenues were up more than 35 percent over last year, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and driven by a surge of 20-somethings at the box office.

Supernatural thriller Chronicle and horror thriller The Woman in Black reaped the most benefit: Chronicle took in a way higher-than-expected $22 million and Black, starring Harry Potter's own Daniel Radcliffe, was right behind it with $21 million.

Among the Oscar contenders, George Clooney's The Descendants came in first with $4.6, followed closely by Viola Davis' Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which enjoyed $3.9 in spoils. Red Tails continued its ride with another $5 million, bringing its total gross to $41.3 mil.

Next week: Denzel Washington is back! The actor, who has been on a mini-hiatus since 2010's Unstoppable, stars in the CIA thriller Safe House.
