Octavia Spencer won the first major award of Oscar night, taking the prize for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Help. This is Spencer's first Oscar nomination and first win.

The actress was overcome with emotion as she walked on stage to a standing ovation and gave a tearful speech, thanking her family in Alabama, Steven Spielberg "for changing my life," The Help director, Tate Taylor, and her co-stars from this year's breakout hit.

Spencer has already taken home multiple awards this season, including a Golden Globe and a SAG Award.
