Even though Think Like a Man is a romantic ensemble comedy, Michael Ealy still works each frame like a leading man. After portraying a wide range of characters on the big screen in films like Takers, For Colored Girls and Underworld: Awakening, the 38-year old takes on the role of Dominic, "The Dreamer," in the film based on Steve Harvey’s bestselling book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. Ealy admits the movie is already one of his all-time favorites.
“I love this film. I honestly love it,” he told BET.com. “I was just telling the writers [Keith Merryman and David A. Newman] that when anybody else was on the screen but me — I was more critical of my own stuff — I just honestly, thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed watching every character and every relationship. The movie breathes enough so that every relationship has an arc and was fleshed out. That’s just so rare in romantic comedies these days.”
In Think Like a Man his love interest is über-successful and super sexy Lauren, aka "The Woman Who Is Her Own Man," played by Taraji P. Henson. Their onscreen relationship is challenge-ridden because Lauren mistakes Dominic for being the power player he’s not. But it was not a case of art imitating life off-screen, Ealy says it was “literally a dream” to work with Henson. “We have talked for years about us working together — the two dramatic actors that we are coming together to do something powerful — and we came together to do a comedy.”
Ealy also says the pairing with Henson elevated his acting game throughout the entire film. “Working with Taraji day in and day out, there’s nothing she can’t handle. Anything that I threw at her in a scene she just knocked it out of the park. She’s so dope,” he gushes. “That’s the only word that can describe her. I hope that we get to do more projects together, I really do. She’s phenomenal.”
And this duo’s onscreen chemistry exuded a palpable sizzle and pop. So does he hope that includes future love scenes with Henson, too?
“Yeah, those too,” Ealy says with a laugh.
Think Like a Man hits theaters on April 20.
